Instagram Safety: Watch Out for Red Flags

1. Watch who they follow

If someone follows only females, be cautious. Not all males are like that, but this can show they aren’t fully trusting. If they follow a mix of males and females, that’s usually fine.

2. Beware of scammers

Many fake accounts pretend to be celebrities or singers. Look for a checkmark — but note that anyone can get verification now, so it’s not a full guarantee. Some real celebrities don’t purchase verification. Use your instincts.

3. Protect yourself from money scams
Some scammers message females pretending to be charities or even celebrities. There was a news story of a woman scammed by a fake Prince Harry for a few hundred dollars. Always be careful who you follow.

4. Manage your DMs
To be extra safe, disable DMs or allow them only from people you follow or people you follow who follow you back. Even then, don’t follow everyone that follows you. Blocked users can create new profiles.

5. Pros and cons

Instagram can be fun, but it has risks. LOL means “laughing out loud.” Be aware it can become a cycle of fake profiles and repeated scams.
