Be Careful When Petting Cats

 

Some people enjoy petting cats, especially when they seem friendly. However, it is important to remember that not every cat is comfortable being touched. Even a calm-looking cat may scratch or bite if it becomes frightened, startled, feels threatened, or simply does not want to be petted.


Cats have different personalities. Some enjoy attention from people, while others prefer to be left alone. It can be difficult to tell how a cat will react, especially if you have never met it before.


Stray or outdoor cats should be admired from a distance. Even if they seem friendly or are used to people feeding them, they may still scratch or bite unexpectedly. It is safest not to touch cats you do not know.


A cat scratch or bite can sometimes lead to an infection because bacteria can enter the skin. In rare cases, other diseases can also be spread through scratches or bites. If you are ever scratched or bitten, wash the area well with soap and water as soon as possible. If the wound is deep, becomes red, swollen, painful, or you have concerns about the animal, seek medical advice promptly.


Being cautious around unfamiliar cats helps protect both you and the cat. It's always better to admire them from a safe distance than to risk an injury.
